Tempe Arizona is located in Maricopa County. Nearby cities and towns include Mesa, Gilbert, Chandler, Fountain Hills, Scottsdale, and Phoenix. Tempe is in the Southeast section of the Phoenix metropolitan area.

Tempe covers less than 40 square miles and has permanent residents totaling less than 175,000. Obviously, the 60,000 students attending at the Tempe campus of ASU have a major impact here. Even so, Tempe is more than ASU.
Tempe has the highest concentration of high-tech companies in Arizona. More than 15% are located in Tempe.
Tempe is located less than nine miles from downtown Phoenix, and is surrounded and bisected by freeways. Tempe is a “mature” community, by Arizona standards. Relatively few homes have been built here since 1985, and building new requires demolishing existing.
Tempe is still developing in other ways. Tempe created Tempe Town Lake with a low-rise deflatable dam on the Salt River. During heavy flow times, the air is let out and the water flows freely. This was done despite much scorn within and without the City, but the lake has turned out to be a very popular attraction. The huge success of Tempe Town Lake was a surprise even for its boosters. Not only has the lake become a favorite recreational area, million-dollar high-rise condos are being built around it.
But the “heart and soul” of Tempe is Mill Street, a North-South street about a mile long on the West side of ASU. In all of Arizona, this is the only large pedestrian-oriented entertainment district, and it is extremely popular. New Years eve, Tempe Mill street is “the” place to be.
